Introduction to China Universities

There were 2,940 higher education institutions (HEIs) across China in 2018. There were 1,245 universities offering Bachelor’s degrees. The number of higher vocational education institutes was 1,418. The number of adult HEIs was 277. For the same period, there were a total of 815 institutions offering postgraduate programs. The number of full-time teachers in regular HEIs reached 1.6728 million.

In 2018, 73.6% of all faculty members in regular HEIs held a Master’s degree or above. The percentages for colleges or universities offering undergraduate programs and in higher vocational education institutes were 83.7% and 50.0%. The proportion of teachers holding senior professional titles increased slightly. 43.2% of teachers at higher education level had a senior professional title.

Rapid progress was made in the provision of equipment and facilities for research and teaching, informatization and online courses, which helped to improve teaching quality. In 2018, the average number of students per regular HEI11 in China was 10,605. Nation-wide progress was made in the provision of equipment and facilities for research and teaching. The average value of equipment per student in regular HEIs was RMB 15,700, and the average number of instructional computers per 100 regular HEI students was 26.9.

University Level

China universities generally can be divided into Project 211, Project 985, Double-First Class and the ordinary university by university level. In 2018, there were 2,940 higher education institutions across China. Among them, there are 39 high education institutions designated as Project 985 institutions and 116 higher education institutions designated as 211 Project institutions for meeting certain scientific, technical, and human resources standards and offering advanced degree programs.

To create world-class universities and disciplines by the end of 2050, Chinese government conceived a Double-First Class University Plan in 2015, and the Ministry of Education released the name list of 42 First Class universities and 95 universities with First Class disciplines in September, 2017.

University Attribute

Based on the sponsor source, China universities generally can be divided into public and private universities. It is commonly considered that public universities were established by the government and the fees of managing universities were supplied by the government, while private universities were controlled by the people, organizations and other non-national organizations that provided the money for the operation of universities. In 2018, there are 784 private colleges and universities and 2663 public colleges and universities in China.

University Type

China universities can be divided into different types according to the ratio of programs in a university. Generally, university types are Comprehensive, Law, Language & Literature, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Management, Art, Sports and so on. However, most of China universities now attach much importance to develop their universities become a comprehensive university.
